I had written the first part of this article – The Teens Monster Called “Trends” (1) a few days ago – with the intention of completing it later but I was thinking of how best to pass the message across in a less-hilarious, more business-like manner but my crazy partner-in-crime, Born Princewill, has made it much easier for me. He tagged his “The Teenage Monster Making Machine”.

Trends are like toothbrushes, every 3 months you need a new one. So every 3 months, thousands of teens drop the true persons they once were to become this “IDEAL MAINSTREAM TREND MONSTER”.

This singular quote effectively captures one of the numerous problems that teens of this modern day society encounter.

Trend, simply put, is what’s in vogue – the “in-thing”. From the iPhone 6 to the Apple Laptop to the Nike Airs to the sweatpants, the trending list is seemingly endless. It’s becoming increasingly ‘trendy’ for girls to dress semi-nude and walk on the streets. The cleavage is the new cheek and the lower back is the new ankle. I’m still trying to figure out where the brain has moved.

The memory of the Versace shirts era is still crystal clear in my memory. Boys in school were doing anything and everything to get a Versace shirt, more like to wear the head of Medusa. (The Versace logo is the head of Medusa, the only mortal of the three ‘gorgon’ sisters, who were vicious female monsters from Greek mythology with sharp fangs and hair of living, venomous snakes). These trends have resulted in an enormous amount of “Good Peeps Gone Bad” cases.

Back then in school, there was this trend which had evolved into a culture. It interestingly had a title attached to it. A boy who did not eat food from the dining hall/the kitchen was tagged a “Kollege Boy”. These boys were starving themselves of food that had been paid for from their school fees just to be titled a “KB”. Much more hilarious was that some of these boys became KB’s to gain reputation among our female counterparts, and about 99.9% of the girls never really cared.

Trends keep you busy buying things you might not necessarily need with money but the thing is you don’t have to impress people who don’t like you. Putting this phrase in context with my story – Trends keep you busy doing things not worthwhile with zeal you shouldn’t commit to impress people who really do not care one bit.

Trends can be said to play a large role in the rate of crime all over the globe. There are individuals out there who have the view of rape as a trend (the reasoning classification of such individuals I refer to as extreme case of dementia). Our high schools and colleges are getting highly populated with students who have forgotten their morals and disciplines and due to that abuse the purpose of being in the university.

Most appalling of all the problems that come with these trends is that most teens have not come to the realization that they (trends) are but only a fad – a phenomenon that becomes popular for a very short time.

Every trend that has been, is and will be in existence was made popular or created by an individual. Anyone can do something cool and look cool, but it takes skill to make something uncool cool again. We could all create our own trends in line with what is comfortable for us in terms of finances, morals etc. instead of being extravagant and exhibiting horrid behaviours and characters all in the name of a trend that would become ‘stale’ only a few months after its release.

Don’t get me wrong at all. Having an iPhone 6 or a pair of Nike Airs is not a terrible thing, if it’s comfortable for you financially. In a situation where it’s not, there is no wisdom in turning a bizarre human being just to follow a trend. A pair of Nike Airs and a pair of normal black shoes all serve the same purpose don’t they?

Come to think of it, if this world is to be governed by trends, President Muhammadu Buhari should legalize same sex marriage then, since it’s what is trending.

Remember, perfection isn’t necessarily found only in publicly accepted trends. Perfection is found in self.

“DO NOT CONFORM ANY LONGER TO THE PATTERN OF THIS WORLD, BUT BE TRANSFORMED BY THE RENEWING OF YOUR MIND. THEN YOU WILL BE ABLE TO TEST AND APPROVE WHAT GOD’S WILL IS; HIS GOOD, PLEASING AND PERFECT WILL” – ROMANS 12:2

Make a change and be that change…
